Diabetes Education


The Scarlet & Grey Way to Diabetes Self-Management Education Program offers comprehensive services for patients with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. Our goal is to provide instruction and technologies to help patients manage diabetes to the best of his or her ability. We believe that through education, people living with diabetes can achieve therapeutic goals and, in the long run, prevent long-term diabetes complications.

All patients require a physician referral before being scheduled for diabetes education classes.

Outpatient Diabetes Education Class Descriptions

Comprehensive Outpatient Education

Two 3 Hour Sessions

Topics to include carbohydrate counting, nutrition basics, diabetes medicine- insulin, injectable or oral, blood sugar monitoring, exercise, treating acute and chronic complications, problem solving, stress management & coping.  Schedule for < 10 hours in group setting; < 2 hours available for 1:1 follow-up. If barrier identified, schedule in 1:1 setting.

Post hospitalization (<30 days) Survival Skills Only

1.5 Hours

Topics to include carbohydrate counting, plate method, medicine, blood glucose monitoring. Schedule for < 3 hours in group or 1:1 setting

Diabetes Nutrition Individual Session Only

1 Hour

Topics to include label reading meal planning and carbohydrate counting and its impact on blood glucose and diabetes medicine needs. Schedule for < 6 hours in an 1:1 or group setting. Schedule with Certified Diabetes Educator.

Insulin Training Only

1 Hour

Topics to include purpose of insulin therapy, administration including mechanics, dosing, site rotation, blood glucose monitoring and sharps disposal. Schedule for < 3 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

Insulin-to-Carb
Ratio Class

Two 3 Hour Sessions

Topics to include types of diabetes, blood glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise, medicine (oral, incretin, insulin), long and short term complication prevention and treatment, coping. Calculate and use insulin to carb ratio for variable meal dosing; may be on an insulin pump.  Schedule for < 10 hours in group setting; < 2 hours available for 1:1 follow-up. If barrier identified schedule in 1:1 setting.

Two 3 Hour Sessions

Topics to include types of diabetes, blood glucose monitoring, nutrition, exercise, medicine (oral, incretin, long acting & set bolus insulin), long and short term complication prevention and treatment, coping. Schedule for <10 hours in group setting, < 2 hours available for 1:1 follow-up. If barrier is identified schedule in 1:1 setting.

Insulin Pump Info Session

 1.5 Hours

Topics to include benefits and limitations of pump therapy, review of pump choices, time with pump manufacturer representatives; review of OSU protocol for initiation and follow-up. Schedule for < 6 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

Insulin Pump Review

 2 Hours

Topics to include insulin pump mechanics, pattern management, infusion sets and site care and rotation, pump software, troubleshooting, insulin pump failure. Schedule for <6 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

 10-14 hours

Topics to include initiation of pump therapy using OSU protocol, insulin pump mechanics, pattern management, infusion sets, site care and rotation; pump software, troubleshooting, pump failure. Schedule for < 14 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

Continuous Glucose Monitor Info Session

 1 Hour

Topics to include benefits and limitations of CGM therapy, review of CGM choices, time with CGM manufacturer representatives; review of OSU protocol for initiation and follow-up. Schedule for < 6 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

Glucose Sensor Start

 1.5 Hours

Topics include sensor insertion, calibration, CGM mechanics, and review of settings, software upload and OSU process for follow up communication.  Schedule for < 3 hours in group or 1:1 setting.

Staying the Course

 2.5 Hours

Follow up education after attending any diabetes class. Stress management, goal setting, carbohydrate counting review and healthy choices when dining out. Schedule for < 3 hours in group or 1:1 setting.
